Beloved, I am glad to share with you today an important theme, namely the consequences of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. We read this in Mark 3.29. Indeed, it’s important to note that blasphemy is a sin of which we are guilty towards God when we attack, deny, or ridicule his perfections, his word, or his ordinances; or that some will or some evil deed is attributed to him (2 Sam 12.14; Tit. 2.5; Rev 13.6). For the blasphemer was punished with death by Moses’ law (Lev 24.16). But, the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit was the crime of the scribes who attributed to Satan the Lord’s miracles (Mat 12:31).
This is why anyone who knows God and resists him can be forgiven, for knowing the Son will undoubtedly change his feelings. And he who knows the Son can still blaspheme and be forgiven, because he only knew him imperfectly. But he who knows the Holy Spirit, that is, who has received all possible graces, and all knowledge, that one, if he blasphemes, he does so because he is hopelessly clever; and therefore he cannot be forgiven, because no new knowledge will be able to change his disposition and his hostility. For his sin is without remedy.
Now, in current language, to blaspheme means to speak lightly about God or to insult him. But, in the Bible, to blaspheme was first of all to damage someone’s honor, reputation by insulting them, slandering them, despising them or even simply blaming them without sufficient cause. Some people fear that they once, carelessly, uttered a guilty word that could never be forgiven. It is to ignore the grace of God. For “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1: 5-7). For only the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit was the terrible sin of unbelieving Israel. These people attributed to Satan the power of the Holy Spirit with which the Lord Jesus was clothed. It was extremely serious, and still is.
In addition, blasphemy in the Old Testament designates any attack made, in word or deed, on the majesty of God, on the honor or respect due to him, or on the rights he has over the creature. . While in the New Testament the term “blasphemy” also takes the meaning of a usurpation by a man, either for his own benefit or for the benefit of another, of the authority, of the rights, of the prerogatives of God, in all or part of it. It is in this sense that the adversaries of the Lord Jesus saw in him a blasphemer, for example when he attributed to himself the power to forgive sins or when he accepted the honors which should only be given to God (Matt 19.3; Mat 26.65; John 10.36).
For their part, the evangelists considered as blasphemous any insult addressed to Christ (Mat 27.39; Mark 15.29; Acts 26.11). But let us rather note the verses: Mark 3.29; Mat 12.31 and Luke 12.10, where it is about the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which is presented to us as the most serious form of sin, since it is the only one that is forever irremediable. Now the Lord Jesus explains to the scribes who came down from Jerusalem: “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand; and if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. So if Satan rebels against himself, he is divided, and he cannot stand, but he is gone. ” For no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his possessions, without first having bound that strong man; then he will plunder his house. Truly I tell you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and the blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never obtain forgiveness: he is guilty of eternal sin. He spoke thus because they said: “He is possessed of an unclean spirit”. Which was a very serious insult.
Ultimately, death was the final condemnation for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. We must therefore avoid committing such a serious transgression.
The verses below have been compiled for your edification and to facilitate your understanding.
- Blasphemy against Christ:
Mat 9.34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons”; Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons”; Mark 3.30 He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit”; Luke 11:15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”; Luke 22:65 And they said many other insulting things to him; Jac 2.7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?
- Sin against the Holy Spirit:
Isa 63.10 Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them; Mat 12.31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven; Mark 3.29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin”; Acts 5: 3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Eph 4.30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption; 1 Thes 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit; Heb 10:29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 1 Jn 5.16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that.
- Irreparable loss suffered by the ungodly:
Ps 36.12 See how the evildoers lie fallen— thrown down, not able to rise!; Pr 6.15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy; Mark 3.29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin”; Luke 16.26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’; Heb 12:17 Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.
- Future punishment:
Ps 11.6 On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot; Ml 3.18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not; Mat 18.9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell; Mat 25.46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”; Mark 3.29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin”; Luke 3:17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire”; 2 Th 1.9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might; 2 P 2.9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment; Rev 14.11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name”; Rev 20:15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
From all of the above, we note that the one who knows the Holy Spirit, that is to say who has received all the possible graces, and all the knowledge, that one, if he blasphemes, he does so because he is deeply clever; and therefore he cannot be forgiven, because no new knowledge will be able to change his disposition and his hostility. For his sin is without remedy. For the people attributed to Satan the power of the Holy Spirit which the Lord Jesus was clothed with, and this was extremely serious, and still is. It is because all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, as well as the blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never obtain forgiveness: he is guilty of eternal sin. Our prayers support you all in your efforts to avoid blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER OF ACCEPTANCE OF JESUS CHRIST AS LORD AND PERSONAL SAVIOR
I now invite anyone who wants to become a new creation by walking in the truth, to pray with me as follows:
Lord Jesus, I have long walked in the lusts of the world ignoring your love for humans. I acknowledge that I have sinned against you and ask forgiveness for all my sins, because today I have decided to give you my life by taking you as my Lord and personal Savior. I acknowledge that you died on the cross of Calvary and that you rose from the dead for me.
I am now saved and born again by the power of the Holy Spirit. Lead me each day to eternal life you give to all who obey your Word. Reveal to me and strengthen my heart and my faith so that your light may shine in my life right now.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for accepting me in your divine family so that I too can contemplate the wonders of your kingdom.
I will now choose a nearby waterpoint to baptize myself by immersion, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
To you all worship, power, and glory, now and forever and ever. Amen!
I would be glad to respond to your queries and comments if necessary, before sharing with you next week Jesus’ family: And he answered, Who is my mother, and who are my brethren?
May the Lord Jesus Christ bless you profusely.
David Feze, Servant of the Almighty God.
